What are human rights?

A

the natural universal and inalienable right to which all humans are entitled
A set of universal standards by which the behavior of governments can be assessed
Research often focuses on how different countries uphold this standard through social, political, civil, and economic rights
Often linked to the type of political regime in place
Violations of human rights lead to conflict and priming of the media typically gaining attention from interest groups such as NGOs or advocacy groups AND other states

What are civil rights?

A

freedom of assembly, freedom of speech, freedom to not be arbitrarily arrested, killed, thrown in jail, right to own property
protection of people from discrimination and unjust treatment, related to one’s identity characteristics and personal choices
Common civil rights are freedom of speech, religion, and sexual orientation, and are a part of laws, constitutions, and international human rights agreements

What are political rights?

A

the right to participate in the exercise of political power as a member of a body invested with political authority or as an elector of the members of such a body, the right to run for office or vote

What are social and economic rights?

A

Socio-economic rights do not necessarily follow from civil and political rights

Why are rights significant?

A

they relate to fundamental aspects of human well-being. Comparative government assesses and analyzes how different countries implement rights within their regime type and how citizen’s lives are impacted. In a democracy, the rights of citizens are reflected in the openness and efficiency of the government
