Q

What is populism?

A

A political strategy through which a personalistic leader seeks or exercises government power based on direct, unmediated, un-institutional support from large numbers of mostly unorganized followers
Symbolic politics - “I speak with and for you”
The resurgence of the sovereignist narrative — notions of fundamental security and identity threats as key mobilizing issues
Minorities and migrants act as easy scapegoats for populist leaders, they are positioned to be “threatening” to one another and use them as a tool for collective identity

Q

What is a dominant party system?

A

Different from a one-party system
There are multiple political parties but one of them always wins the elections
In some countries, this is not a worry it is just the way the country votes but in newer democracies it can bring stability and predictability in the building of a new democracy bc they are not haunted by electoral defeat
