The Kapp Putsch- When, Where, Who, Why, What
When- 13th March 1920
Where- Berlin
Who- Wolfgang Kapp and General Luttwitz
Why- opposed to TofV disarmament clause. 12,000 troops marched and took control of Berlin as the LW govt fled. Army refused to defend the govt with their leader Von Seeckt famously stating “Troops do not fire on troops”
What- Weimar govt called for general strike which brought Berlin to a standstill. After 4 days and lacking control, Kapp and his govt fled. In the aftermath Von Seeckt was promoted to Chief of Army command while Luttwitz was granted early retirement. 1 out of 705 people were sentenced
Munich Putsch
When- 8-9 Nov 1923
Who- Ludendorff, Von Kahr, Von Lossow, Hitler
Where- Munich, Bavaria
Why- The group group planned to overthrow the Weimar Govt as it faced the mounting crisis of hyperinflation
What- Nazis led by Von Kahr and Von Lossow stormed a meeting in a beer hall and forced the men to agree to a putsch. The next day they withdrew their support and Bavarian police crushed the Nazis. 14 killed and Hitler was arrested and sentenced to 5 years in prison. Von Ludendorff was acquitted on grounds that he accidentally join a putsch
