Nicknamed ‘Cabinet of Barons’ as it was dominated by the elite (industrialists/bankers) many of whom were not part of the elite
Presidential government as members not elected by the German people
Wanted NSDAP backing to make this form of government appear to have popular backing
Hitler agreed to support on condition that SA/SS Ban was lifted and a new set of Reichstag elections were called
What happened during the Reichstag elections 1932
Marred by political violence leading to 86 deaths
Violence resulted in Von Papen and Schleicher closing down Prussian land Parliament (undemocratic as the land had been elected by Prussian voters.)
What were the results of the July 1932 elections
NSDAP winning 230 seats
Votes declined for democratic parties
Hitler gained 11million votes in April presidential election compared to Hindenburgs 18million

Von Papen called for another election

Von Papen failed to win majority for a second time
NSDAP vote declined to 196 but Hitler still demanded to be Chancellor
Von Schleicher niw an enemy as he informed Hindenburg of army’s lack of confidence in Von Papens abilities as Chancellor
