Realists believe the only way to reduce crime is to ensure the consequences are severe enough to stop people choosing crime.
Broken windows theory
Broken windows theory is an example of the need for consequences to stop criminal behaviour:
If a single window in a building is broken by a vandal, and is subsequently left un-mended; then more windows will be broken, the residents will no longer want to live there and will move to a ‘better’ area and the community will reduce to a ghetto area.
Crime increases as there are no consequences for the actions.

Refusal to accept antisocial behaviour, typically by strict and uncompromising application of the law.
This means punishment for all crimes, no matter how small
