Q

Right Realism

A

Right Realists:
crime is NOT caused by deprivation and poverty.
Right Realists view humans as selfish and greedy, who choose to commit crime.
harsh punishment as a means of maintaining social order.
They also see the underclass as a key factor behind crime.
The underclass are a subculture at the bottom of the social class system , characterized by unemployment and living on benefits as the norm, criminal values and a lack of connection with the value consensus.

Q

Broken windows theory

A

Broken windows theory is an example of the need for consequences to stop criminal behaviour:
If a single window in a building is broken by a vandal, and is subsequently left un-mended; then more windows will be broken, the residents will no longer want to live there and will move to a ‘better’ area and the community will reduce to a ghetto area.
Crime increases as there are no consequences for the actions.

Right Realists therefore believe the solution to crime is zero tolerance
Refusal to accept antisocial behaviour, typically by strict and uncompromising application of the law.
This means punishment for all crimes, no matter how small
