left Realism Flashcards
Left Realism
Left Realists also reject the idea that crime is caused by poverty.
However, they believe criminal behaviour is caused by the cycle of deprivation:
Subcultures develop amongst groups who suffer relative deprivation (less in comparison to others). Specific dress, tattoos etc are worn here
Marginalisation (treatment of a person, group, or concept as insignificant) occurs where groups in society who feel more deprived than others, often economically, socially and politically. They feel as if they have no voice
The poor become aware of their lower status and the fact that they ARE poor and turn to crime to rectify this. They are aware that others have more than them and therefore steal to change this
The Square of Crime
- The Square of Crime approach combines all of these aspects into four elements. Crime can only be understood by examining the interrelationship between these four factors:
- State: is losing the fight against crime and there is a loss of public confidance in the police because of the military
style of policing - Offender: avoid romantisising crime
marginlastion
relitive depration
subcuchers
but must not exscuse the criminal - Informal controls: the fears if stigmatision and regection are more likey to reduce crime than the use of formal sactions
- Victim: concern for the consequences of crime for the victims and naber hoods.
Lift Realism example
Example – domestic violence
For the crime of ‘domestic violence’ to exist there first needs to be a law to prevent it from happening.
The existence of that law is influenced by the public.
In order for that law to be broken there needs to be both an offender and a victim.
