Rational ideology (social control)
your conscience guides you to follow laws and rules due to experiencing feelings of guilt and anxiety or worry from within.
tradition (social control)
- ones own traditions, customs and norms that ensure you conform to rules.
- This could be from religion, culture or upbringing.
Internalization of social rules( social control)
- When a person agrees and believes in social norms they therefore internalize them and follow them,
- A social norm is to not commit crime
- Therefore most people internalize this and behave accordingly
Concern (social control)
- the use of force to achieve a desired end, which may be physical or non-violent.
- Physical coercion includes bodily injury, imprisonment or the death penalty.
- Non-violent coercion includes strike, boycott and non-cooperation.
fear of punishment (social control)
- using punishment as a deterrent to stop people from committing crime -
- people don’t want to be punished so they behave
- For example, people don’t what to go to prison so they don’t commit crime
what is Social control
Social control is the means through which society maintains social order.
what is Internal social control?
Internal means of control, such as an individual’s own sense of right and wrong, decrease the likelihood that the individual will deviate from social norms.
Internal social control is regulating one’s own behaviour in accordance with accepted forms
External social control
individuals conform because an authority figure threatens sanctions if the individual disobeys.
