What are gynaecological causes of RIF?
Ectopic pregnancy: Key symptoms include abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding, and amenorrhea.
Ovarian torsion: Presents with severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and fever.
Ovarian cyst torsion: Characterized by lower abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.
Ovarian cyst rupture: Features sudden, sharp pain in the lower abdomen.
Pelvic inflammatory disease: Key symptoms include lower abdominal pain, fever, and abnormal vaginal discharge.
What are GI causes of RIF pain?
Acute appendicitis: Characterized by sudden RIF pain, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, constipation or diarrhea.
Mesenteric adenitis: Presents with right-sided abdominal pain, fever, and occasional diarrhea.
Inflamed Meckel’s diverticulum: Symptomized by abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, and vomiting.
Diverticulitis: Features include abdominal pain, fever, nausea, and altered bowel movements.
Inflammatory bowel disease (particularly Crohn’s disease as RIF pain can suggest terminal ileitis): Typical symptoms include diarrhea, fever, fatigue, abdominal pain and cramping, and bloody stools.
What are urological causes of RIF pain?
Pyelonephritis: Characterized by upper back and flank pain, high fever, shaking and chills, nausea, and vomiting.
Ureteric colic: Features pain in the back and side below the ribs, which spreads to the lower abdomen and groin.
How is RIF pain investigated?
Laboratory tests: Full blood count, C-reactive protein (CRP), urine dipstick, pregnancy test for women of childbearing age.
Imaging studies: Ultrasound, CT scan, MRI.
In selected cases, diagnostic laparoscopy or surgical exploration may be required.
