Richards (2015) Flashcards
“Real scientist”
Brings investigative ingenuity, and courage and integrity that permit a challenging of the status quo. A vision not distorted by public opinion or bias
Psi
Defined as involving interactions between organisms and their environment that appear to transcend the physical and biological demarcations of Western science
Parapsychology
A scientific discipline that studies psi
Creative product
Defined using criteria of originality and meaningfulness
Creative process
The means by which we bring the new product into existence. It can be seen as one potential antidote to narrow-minded thinking
Taboo
Either sacred or, dangerous or forbidden. They all serve the same goal, which is preservation of the status quo. They can be so powerful or frightening, that they bring about major defensive maneuvers. A taboo can also operate on an unconscious level, before we can even consciously consider the issues, or what is at stake if we avoid them
Counterintuitive psychology research
Made readers concerned and skeptical. Led to refusal and rejection of something that seemed so unlikely. Even though the research had been validated; knee-jerk dismissal
Individual with a more creative process
More aware, open, nondefensive, and dynamically oriented. Such creative functioning, as part of daily life, shows similarities to features of Maslow’s self-actualising creativity
Appreciation
Can call on creative vision, openness to alternatives, flexible adaptations to, and changes in our lives and values
Cultural creatives
Value newer healthier, and more sustainable lifestyles, and embrace varied innovations
The Butterfly Effect
In general, when enough people, or enough influential people, accept a change, it may become a new norm
Creative dissociation
Includes the mind’s evolved ability to escape, transform, and possibly transcend the limitations of ordinary reality
Latent inhibition
A gatekeeper to select the most immediate and practical information. Lowered for people with schizophrenia
Magical thinking
Framed as being “inconsistent with subcultural norms (superstitiousness, telepath, or “sixth sense)”
Chaos/catastrophe theory
Shows many small stamps before a big shift
