Rhinovirus Flashcards
What sense RNA is Rhinovirus and is it enveloped?
+RNA, non-enveloped
What consequence does not having an envelope have on Rhinovirus?
It cannot survive outside the nasopharynx because of increased temp and lower ph in stomach; they can live on surfaces
What is the mechanism of infection for Rhinovirus?
RV serotypes based on receptor specificity for ICAM-1, LDL-R and Sialoprotein Receptors
How does Rhinovirus replicate?
By using the IRES mechanism; viral protease cleaves cap to disable host
What disease does RV cause?
MCC Common Cold
Briefly describe the infection process of RV.
Infection in nose > 12-72 hr incubation (viral proteases promoting viral synthesis in nasal cells during this) > viral inflammation > local inflammatory response responsible for symptoms
What are the symptoms of Cold?
Nasal discharge, sneezing, obstruction, throat infection
What is diagnosis based on?
Symptoms
What symptoms would make you consider an alternate diagnosis?
Fever/Systemic –> alternate bug
Erythema/edema/exudate –> other bug
Conjuctivits/nasal polyps –> adenovirus
What is the treatment of rhinovirus?
Self limiting; treat symptoms; NO vaccine b/c over 100 serotypes
When is this virus most likely to happen?
In the fall and spring; independent of cold exposure
How is it transmitted?
Exposure to infected respiratory secretions via inhalation
How can you distinguish between other viruses that cause cold and Rhinoviruses?
RV’s DO NOT PRESENT with nasopharyngitis or serious lung infection
