What’s the most common cause of CAP; usually seen in middle aged adults and elderly
Strep. pneumoniae
Cause of lobar pneumonia. It affects malnourished and debilitated individuals, especially elderly in nursing homes, alcoholics, and diabetics. Thick mucoid capsule results in currant jelly sputum; often complicated by abcess
Klebsiella pneumonia
Most common cause of secondary pneumonia; often complicated by abscess or empyema
Staph aureus
Common cause of secondary pneumonia superimposed on COPD
H. influenzae
Pneumonia in cystic fibrosis patients. It’s also the most common cause of nosocomial pneumonia (transmitted commonly via aspirators); often associated with infarction due to vessel wall invasion
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
CAP and pneumonia superimposed on COPD
Moraxella cattarhalis
CAP, pneumonia imposed on COPD, or ICP; transmitted from water source and seen with silver stain
Legionella pneumophilia
Most common cause of atypical pneumonia. Affects young adults and military recruits
Mycoplasma pneumoniae
Second most common cause of atypical pneumonia in young adults
Chlamydia pneumoniae
Most common cause of atypical pneumonia in infants
RSV
Atypical pneumonia with post transplant patients
CMV
Atypical pneumonia in elderly, ICPs, or those with pre existing lung disease. Also risk for secondary pneumonia
Flu
Atypical pneumonia with high fever
Coxiella burnetii
