Allergic rhinitis - groups of drugs used
Antihistamines. Corticosteroids. Decongestants. Muscarinic antagonist. Mast cell stabilizers. NSAIDs.
Viral rhinitis - drugs
Analgesics (acetaminophen, ibuprofen).
Decongestants (psuedoephedrine).
Rhinorrhea - Ipratropium
Antihistamines used for allergic rhinitis - 6 drugs
Cetrizine, loratadine, fexofenadine, diphenhydramine.
Ocular formulations: azelastine, olopatadine
Antihistamines - how are they used in treating allergic rhinitis?
Orally adm: peak seasonal exposure to allergen. The ones causing sedation: nocturnal symtoms.
Topical ocular: Mild allergic conjunctivitis.
Corticosteroids used for allergic rhinitis + adm
Budesonide. Fluticasone. Ciclesonide. Adm by inhalation. Not preferred for allergic conjunctivitis
Topical ocular corticosteroids - adverse effects
Long-term: Increased ocular pressure, cataracts.
Decongestants used for allergic rhinitis (1 drug)
Psuedoephedrine: nasal congestion
Muscarinic antagonists used for allergic rhinitis - 1 drug
Ipratropium - rhinorrhea.
Mast cell stabilizers used in allergic conjunctivitis - 2 drugs + adm
Cromolyn.
Lodoxamide.
Topical ocular
NSAIDs used for allergic conjunctivitis
Ketorlac
When is ketorlac indicated in allergic conjunctivitis?
Severe ocular symptoms
