Antitussives and expectorants Flashcards
Antitussives - 2 groups and adm
Locally acting (menthol) - throat sprays/lozenges Centrally acting: opioids - orally
Locally acting antitussives - MOA
Suppress coughing by locally anesthetizing afferent nerves.
Centrally acting antitussives - MOA
Suppress coughing by inhibiting the cough center in the medulla.
Centrally acting antitussives - 3 drugs
Dextromethorphan.
Codeine.
Hydrocodone.
Most widely used opioid antitussive drug, and why is it used this much?
Dextromethorphan - minimal CNS effects (drowsiness, euphoria, analgesia) except high doses
Codeine and hydrocodone - classification
Moderate opioid agonists
Codeine and hydrocodone - adverse effects
Relatively little CNS depression and euphoria.
Drugs often contained in liquid cough preparations
Codeine/hydrocodone, guaifenesin, antihistamines, decongestants.
Expectorants - MOA
Facilitates coughing up of mucus by reducing the adhesiveness and surface tension of respiratory tract secretions.
Expectorants - 1 durg
Guaifenesin
Guaifenesin - indications
Thick, tenacious respiratory tract secretions.
Dry nonproductive coughing.
Sinusitis.
