Rhabdomyolysis (0) Flashcards
1
Q
What is rhabdomyolysis?
A
Condition where skeletal muscle tissue breaks down and releases breakdown products into blood
2
Q
Cell death results in myocytes releasing?
A
Myoglobin
Potassium
Phosphate
Creatinine kinase
3
Q
What is particularly toxic in kidney to high concentrations ?
A
Myoglobin, results in AKI, which then leads to breakdown products accumulating further in blood
4
Q
What can rhabdomyolysis present as?
A
Muscle aches and pains Oedema Fatigue Confusion Red-brown urine
5
Q
Investigations of rhabdomyolysis?
A
- Creatinine Kinase (CK) bloods
- Myoglobinuria
- U&Es
- ECG: Hyperkalaemia
6
Q
Management of rhabdomyolysis?
A
IV fluids: treatment mainstay
- Consider IV NaHCO3
- Consider IV mannitol, although correct hypovolaemia before giving
