What is acute tubular necrosis?
A
Damage and death of epithelial cells of renal tubules
-Most common cause of AKI

How long to recover from acute tubular necrosis?
A
7-21 days as that’s how long it tales epithelial cells to recover

Causes of acute tubular necrosis?
A
Ischaemia:
- Shock
- Sepsis
- Dehydration
Direct damage from toxins can occur due to:
- Radiology contrast dye
- Gentamicin
- NSAIDs
- Lithium
- Heroin

Investigation of acute tubular necrosis?
A
Urinalysis
- Muddy brown casts
- Also can be renal tubular epithelial cells in urine

Management of acute tubular necrosis?
A
Same as other causes fo AKI
- Supportive
- IV fluids
- Stop nephrotoxic meds
- Treat comps
