Presentation of HUS?

A

Classic triad of

  • Haemolytic anaemia
  • AKI
  • Low platelet count (thrombocytopenia)

Cause of HUS?

A
  • E. coli toxin called shiga toxin

- Loperamide increases risk of HUS

Presentation of HUS?

A
-E. coli causes brief GI with bloody diarrhoea 
THEN 
5 days after diarrhoea 
-Reduced urine output 
-Abdo pain 
-Lethargy and irritability 
-Confusion 
-HT 
-Bruising

Management of HUS?

A

-Medical emergency
Condition is self limiting and supportive management = mainstay

  • Anti-hypertensives
  • Blood transfusions
  • Dialysis
