what does bismuth subsalicylate do?
binds to GI pathogens and coats the GI tract on the way out
what are side effects of bismuth subsalicylate?
increases bleeding time, constipation, dark stools, and a dark tongue
what class is loperamide / diphenoxylate?
antimotility
what is bismuth subsalicylate used for?
diarrhea
what does loperamide / diphenoxylate do?
slows down and dries the GI tract
what are the side effects of loperamide / diphenoxylate?
bradycardia, hypotension, headache, dry skin, dizziness (think lack of fluid stuff)

bulk forming laxative
what does psyllium do?
absorbs water in the GI tract causing distention which leads to increased bowel activity and movement
what are the side effects of psyllium?
impaction, gas, F&E imbalance (don’t take if already having these symptoms)

constipation
what class is docusate sodium?
emollient
what does docusate sodium do?
lubricates and promotes fat absorption in the GI tract, retains water
what are the side effects of docusate sodium?
decreased absorption of nutrients, rash
