what are the 3 functions of the GI tract?
provide nutrients for body with propulsive and mixing movements
secretion of digestive juices
absorption of nutrients
what is the function of the upper esophageal sphincter?
prevents fluid / food from being aspirated
what is the function of the lower esophageal sphincter?
prevents acidic content from lower stomach from entering back into the esophagus
what is the capacity of the stomach?
1000 - 1500 ml
what are the 3 layers of the stomach?
mucosa (has G-cells, parietal cells, chief cells, and epithelial cells)
muscle layer
serosa (covering, outermost layer)
what do G-cells release?
gastrin
what do parietal cells release?
HCl and intrinsic factor
what do chief cells release?
pepsin
where are the crypts of Lieberkunn, goblet cells, and brunner cells found?
in the small intenstines
what do the crypts of Lieberkunn release?
2L of fluid into the small intestines per day
what do goblet and brunner cells do?
release mucus
what is the average turn over rate for cells in the small intestines
48-72 hours
what is the average turnover for cells in the large intestines?
3-8 days
