Reversible reactionsd Flashcards
As reactants react, their concentrations fall so forward reaction will slow down but as more and more products are made their concentrations , backward reaction will speed up then….
After a while forward reaction same rate as backward one there at equilibrium
what is dynamic equilibrium
Both reaction are happening but no overall effect this means concentrations have reached balance and wont change
Equilibrium reactions can only take place in … system
closed system so no product / reactant can escape
If equilibrium lies to the right what does this mean
Concentration of products is greater on tan that of reactants
If equilibrium lies of the left what does this mean
Concentration of reactants is greater than products
Position of equilibrium depends on what conditions
Temperature
pressure
concentration
How does temperature affect equilibrium
ammonium chloride = ammonium + hcl
heating this reaction will lead to equilibrium moving to the left
and cooling to the right
In reversible reactions if one direction is exothermic the other is
Endothermic
energy transferred from surroundings by the endothermic reaction is equal to the energy transferred it the surroundings during exothermic reaction
Endothermic and exothermic reaction example (thermal decomposition of hydrated copper sulfate)
If you heat blue hydrated copper sulfate crystals , it drives off water and leaves white anhydrous(without water) sulfate powder . THIS IS ENDOTHERMIC
If you then add a couple of drops of water TO the white powder you get the blue crystal back again . EXOTHERMIC
