Le Chatelier's principle Flashcards
What is Le Chatelier’s principle is
the idea that if you change the conditions of a reversible reaction at equilibrium , the system will try to counteract that change
it can be used to predict the effect of any changes to make to a reaction system
What happens to the equilibrium if you decrease the temperature
If you decrease the temperature , the equilibrium will move the exothermic to produce more heat
means you’ll get more products for the exothermic reaction and fewer products for endothermic reaction
What happens to the equilibrium if you increase the temperature
If you raise the temperature , the equilibrium will move in the endothermic direction to try and decrease it. You’ll now get more products for the endothermic reaction and fewer for exothermic
What happens if you increase pressure in gases to the equilibrium
If you increase the pressure the equilibrium will try to reduce this -
it moves in the direction where there are fewer molecules of gas
What happens if you decrease pressure in gases to the equilibrium
If you decrease the pressure the equilibrium tries to increase it
it moves in the direction where there are more gas molecules
What happens to the equilibrium if you change the concentrations
If you change the concentrations of the reactants or the products the system will no longer be at equilibrium
so system responds to bring itself back to equilibrium again
So if you increase concentration of reactants in the system
It tries to decrease it by making more reactants
So if you decrease concentration of products in the system
system tries to increase it by reducing amount of reactants
