Hydrocarbons Flashcards
what is a hydrocarbon
a compound that only contains hydrogen and carbon
Alkanes are simplest hydrocarbons you can get what is the formula
CnH2n+2
homologous series means what
A group of organic compounds that react in a similar way
due to them being saturated compounds each carbon atom forms 4 single covalent bonds
What are the first 4 alkanes
methane CH4 , Ethane C2H6 ,
Propane C3H8 Butane C4H10
As hydrocarbons length changes so does there properties what are the properties (affect how there used as fuels)of shorter hydrocarbon(lower boiling point used as bottled gases stored under pressure as liquid bottles
runny(less viscous gloopy)
more volatile due to lower boiling points(evaporate at low temps
more flammable easier to ignite
Complete combustion occurs when there’s plenty of oxygen what happens when it happens to hydrocarbons
hydrocarbon + oxygen = c02 (waste) water(waste)
lots of energy
by carbon and oxygen are oxidised
Why are Hydrocarbons used as fuels
due to the amount of energy released when they combust completely
