What are restrictive disorders
Decrease in lung compliance due to stiffness and lung interstitium becoming thicker
Low FEV1 and low FVC, normal/increased FEV1/FVC ratio
Symptoms of restrictive lung diseases
Dyspnoea, type 1 respiratory failure, heart failure, fibrosis, dry cough, fine creps
What is sarcoidosis?
No caseating granulomatous disease
Symptoms of sarcoidosis
Wheeze, cough, chest pain, erythema nodosum, elevated ACE
How to treat sarcoidosis
Mild = no treatment and NSAIDs or topical steroids for rashes
Systemic steroids given if other systems involved
What is idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
Rare, progressive, fibrotic scar tissue
Irreversible decline in lung function
Symptoms of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
Dry cough, finger clubbing, smooth muscle and vascular proliferation
What is hypersensitive pneumonitis
Inhalation of mould, bacteria, bird feathers, occupational dusts
