Cardiomyopathy, Myocarditis And Pericarditis Flashcards
What is dilated cardiomyopathy?
heart becomes enlarged and cannot pump blood
effectively —> insult to the myocardium
When would dilated cardiomyopathy be treated?
If heart failure or thrombosis present
Signs/symptoms of dilated cardiomyopathy
narrow pulse pressure, mitral regurgitation, pleural effusion
What is restrictive cardiomyopathy?
inability to fill ventricle, ventricle wall has reduced
compliance
What is hypertrophic cardiomyopathy?
impaired relaxation, myocyte hypertrophy and disarray
What is myocarditis?
acute or chronic inflammation of the myocardium
What does myocarditis lead to?
Arrhythmia, heart block, heart failure
What is pericarditis?
inflammation of pericardial layers
What are the symptoms and signs of pericarditis?
pleuritic chest pain, muffled heart sounds
What is pericardial effusion?
fluid within the pericardial space
Symptoms and signs of pericardial effusion?
Paradoxical pulse (radial pulse may not be palpated), muffled heart sounds, rub
What is constrictive pericarditis?
Rare, pericardial knock
