What is restorative justice?

A

Focuses on the rehabilitation of offfenders through reconcilliation of survivors

  • Enables the offender to see the impact of their crimes
  • Serves to empower survivors by giving them a “voice”

What are features of restorative justice?

A
  • Having a trained mediator supervising interaction
  • Take place in person or via video
  • Should be in a voluntary setting
  • Survivor is able to confront the offender face to face and explain the effects it had
  • Enables the offender to understand the impact of their actions as they must be actively engaged in the process
  • The focus is on positive outcomes for both survivors or offenders
  • May also be extended to include relevant community members

  • Restitution could be financial
  • Restorative justice is flexible and can be an alternative to prison
  • The restorative justice Council (RJC) advocates use of restorative justice beyond crimes, e.g schools workplaces
