Responsible Choice of Antimicrobials Flashcards
Describe antimicrobial stewardship
Antimicrobial Stewardship Co-ordinated interventions designed to improve and measure the appropriate use of antimicrobials by promoting selection of the optimal antimicrobial drug regimen , dose, duration of therapy and route of administration.
Describe three ways in which the risk of antimicrobial resistance can be reduced by vets
Work with clients to avoid need for antimicrobial use
Choose right drug for right bug
Avoid inappropriate use
What kind of bacteria do Penicillin G and first generation cephalosporins work on?
Gram positive beta lactams
What kind of bacteria do Eruthromycin and tylosin work on?
Gram posistive macrolides
What kind of bacteria do Gentamicin and Dihyrostreptomycin work on?
Gram negative aminoglycosides
What factor affect the decision between bacteriocidal and bacteriostatic drugs
Bactericidal often favored as more effective when host defenses impaired
What are first line antibiotics and how do they differ from second line ones?
First line drugs are fist administred for diseases and are usually chosen due to their fewer side effects and high clinical effectiveness.
Second line drugs are used when first line show no effect for the disease or have side effects.
Describe the minimum selection concentration
The minimum concentration of an antibiotic required to produce selective resistance. ( can be lower than therapeutic concentration so if TC not maintained bacteria can still become resistant)
