rhinitis
inflammation of the mucous membranes of nose and nasal passage - called by allergies or virus
rhinovirus
picornaviradae family; SS+RNA (non-enveloped) genome
prime replication temperature for rhinovirus and coronavirus
colder temperatures (33-35 degrees celsius)
rhinovirus pathogenesis
infection of epithelial cells of nasal passage lead to obstruction of nasal passages, rhinorrhea, cough, and/or sore throat
rhinovirus immunity
antibody is produced that targets virus (however large antigenic diversity among virus strains)
rhinitis clinical manifestations
incubation 1-3 days; runny and stuffy nose, watery eyes, cough, sneezing, sore throat, malaise, symptoms last 3-10 days
rhinitis treatment
self-limiting. treat symptoms
