Respiratory Sytem Flashcards
What is bronchoconstriction and dilation and how does this relate to asthma
bronchoconstriction is an abnormal contraction of the smooth muscle in the airways of the lungs that results in narrowing and difficulty breathing
Bronchodilation is when smooth muscle in the airways relax and airway resistance decreases
Asthma is when you suffer bronchoconstriction as result to certain stimuli
What is Dalton’s law
The total pressure exerted by a mixture of gases is equal to the sum of the partial pressures of gases in mixture
What is Henrys law
The amount of dissolved gas in a liquid is directly propionate to its partial pressure above the liquid
What is Boyles law
That a gases pressure and volume are inversely proportional
What is quiet inspiration and what are the muscles involved
The type of breathing that occurs at occurs at rest
- Diaphragm
- external intercostals
What is forced inspiration and what are the muscles involved
The type of breathing where accessory muscles join in to help you breath deeper and get more air
- Diaphragm
- sternacleidmastoid
- external intercostal
- scalene
- serratus anterior muscles
Describe the pleural membranes and pleural cavity and how they participate in breathing
There are 3 layers to the pleura the visceral pleura the which is the innermost, The pleural cavity and the parietal pleura which is the outermost
The pleural cavity allows optimal expansion and contraction of the lungs during breathing. The pleural fluid acts as a lubricant allowing the visceral and parietal pleura to glide over each other friction free
Where are the conduction and respiratory portions of the respitory tract
Where is the primary site of gas exchange
Conduction zone
- Nose to the Bronchioles
Respiratory zone
- Aveolar duct to Aveoli
primary site of gas exchange is in the respiratory zone (aveoli)
What is the function of the epiglottis
To close your trachea when you swallow so food doesn’t enter your airway
What is the function of your tonsils
Help prevent germs like viruses or bacteria from Entering the body through nose or mouth
What is the function of your true vocal cords
Allows you to vocalize and make sounds
What is the function of the cartilaginous c rings of the trachea
Protect and maintain the airway open
What is the tidal volume ?
It is equal to about 500 ml and is The total amount of air moving into or out the lungs at rest within a single respiratory cycle
