Exam 6 Flashcards

1
Q

What are the functions of the urinary system

A
  • Excretion of metabolic wastes, toxins and drugs from the body
  • Regulate volume and chemical makeup of blood
  • Help regulate blood pressure and kidney function through secretion of enzyme renin
  • Help control rate of RBC production by secreting EPO
  • Metabolize Vitamin D to its active form

Q

What is the difference between he afferent and efferent arteriole and how does this play a role in net filtration pressure

A

The afferent arteriole is bigger which brings in more blood than the efferent arteriole can drain this creates a very high pressure of about 50 - 55mgHg in the glomerulus

This high pressure is required for filtration

Q

Describe the JG complex the structures involved and what is secreted there

A

The JG complex is composed of
- Juxtaglomerular cells
- Macula Densa cells
- Extraglomerular cells

JG are baroreceptors cells and secrete renin
