Exam 6 Flashcards
What are the functions of the urinary system
- Excretion of metabolic wastes, toxins and drugs from the body
- Regulate volume and chemical makeup of blood
- Help regulate blood pressure and kidney function through secretion of enzyme renin
- Help control rate of RBC production by secreting EPO
- Metabolize Vitamin D to its active form
What are the layers of the bowman’s capsule
- Visceral layer (podocytes)
- Parietal layer (simple squamous epithelium
What is the difference between he afferent and efferent arteriole and how does this play a role in net filtration pressure
The afferent arteriole is bigger which brings in more blood than the efferent arteriole can drain this creates a very high pressure of about 50 - 55mgHg in the glomerulus
This high pressure is required for filtration
What are the 3 mechanism that control the GFR
- Autoregulation (myogenic response)
- Tubuloglomerular feedback
- Renin
Describe the JG complex the structures involved and what is secreted there
The JG complex is composed of
- Juxtaglomerular cells
- Macula Densa cells
- Extraglomerular cells
JG are baroreceptors cells and secrete renin
