What is the function of the digestive system
To convert the food we eat into a form our body can recognize and utilize
What are the accessory organs in the digestive system ?
Teeth
Tongue
Salivary glands
Pancreas
Liver
Gallbladder
What is the alimentary Canal
A long tube in which food passes through the digestive system it starts at the mouth and ends at the anus
What are the 6 essential activites for the process of digestion
Ingestion - taking in food
propulsion - moving food through digestive system
Mechanical digestion - prepares food for chemical digestion
Chemical digestion - chemical breakdown of food into its smallest building blocks
Absorption - Is the passage of digested end products, vitamins and water from lumen of gi tract into blood or lymph
Defecation - the elimination of undigested food through anus as feces
What is deglutition
The process of moving a bolus of food or a mouthful of liquid into the esophagus also known as swallowing
What is peristalsis
The process of muscle contraction of smooth muscle in the digestive system that moves digestive matter into various parts of the system
describe how and where food become bolus
After food is ingested it goes to the mouth where it is chewed and mixed with saliva so it can be easily swallowed
Describe how and where food becomes a chyme
After food (bolus) goes through your esophagus it ends up in your stomach where your stomach muscles mix the food and liquid with digestive fluids
How and where is chyle formed
After the chyme has passed into the duodenum it is mixed with two other fluids. Bile which is secreted by the liver and the pancreatic juice which is formed by the pancreas. It is then dissolved further into a milky liquid called chyle
How and where is feces formed
Waste products of the digestive products move into the large intestine. Bacteria in the large intestine helps break down remaining nutrients and materials and helps change the remaining liquid into a stool
What is the name of neurons found in the muscularis external
Myenteric plexus
What is the name of the neurons found in the sub mucosa
Sub mucosa plexus
What cranial nerve connects the GIT neurons to the brain
Cranial Nerve X
What is the peritoneum
A membrane that lines you abdomnopelvic cavity and lines your abdominal organs
