Study

On which lung surface is the hilum found?
Mediastinal
What is the hilum of the lung?
The area on the medial surface of the lung through which structures enter or leave the lung

What is the root of the lung?
The structures which enter and leave the lung are collectively know as the root
What 4 structures constitute the root of the lung?
- Airways
- Vessels
- Nerves
- Lymphatics
What fascial membrance covers the apex of the lung?
Supraplueral membrane
Which lung is shorter and broader and why?
- Right lung due to the liver
What are the structures that pass through the hilums (both left and right)?
- Bronchus posterior in both
- Pulmonary veins anterior and inferior
- Pulmonary artery superior on left
- Pulmonary artery central and superior on right
- Right has eparterial bronchus

What is the pleura?
- Double layer of serous membranes surrounding the lungs
Outer _____ membrane?
- Parietal
Inner _____ membrane?
- Visceral
What is the visceral pleura adhered to?
- The lung
What is the parietal pleura adherent to?
- The inner surface of the ribs, sternum and mediastinum
Where in the lung are the two areas continuous with eachother?
The root of the lung
What structures does the mediastinal pluera line?
- Structures situated between the two pleural cavities
What is the apical pleura?
- The pleura that lines the apex of the lungs in the root of the neck
What is a pleural reflection?
- Areas where the parietal pluera lining one surface in the chest changes it’s direction to line another surface
What is the relationship between the parietal and the visceral pleura at pleural reflections?
- The parietal is further apart from the visceral at reflections than at other points
What does the increased distance create?
- A pleural recess (space)
Identify and name the pleural recesses on the diagram?

- Superior arrow = costomediastinal reflex (THIS IS ON THE OTHER LUNG)
- Inferior arrow = costodiaphramatic recess
Which pleura is sensitive to pain?
- Parietal
What nerve supplies the mediastinal and diaphragmatic pleura?
- Phrenic
What nerves supply the rest of the pleura?
- Intercostal nerves
