Respiratory System Anatomy pt 2 Flashcards
What are the physical characteristics of the trachea?
it is 10-12 cm long; about 2.5 cm in diameter; flexible, mobile
What are the three layers of the trachea? and what are they?
- Mucosa: ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium with goblet cells
- Submucosa: connective tissue with seromucous glands
- Adventitia: outermost layer made of connective tissue reinforced internally by 16-20 C-shaped cartilage rings that prevent collapse of trachea
What inhibits and then destroys cilia? What is the only way to clear mucus because of this?
SMOKING! the only way to clear mucus because of this is COUGHING
what happens to the air in the bronchi?
The air in the bronchi is warmed, cleansed of most impurities and humidified
How many orders of branching do air passages undergo?
23 orders
What are the orders of branching called?
bronchial tree–> bronchioles–> terminal bronchioles
What do the Conducting zone structures give rise to?
Respiratory zone structures
What are terminal bronchioles?
These are the smallest of all branches. They branch into respiratory bronchioles leading into alveolar ducts and finally into alveolar sacss
