Respiratory System Flashcards
List the main organs involved in the entering of oxygen to the lungs
Nose, Trachea, Pharynx, Oestrophogus, Larynx, Bronchi, Branchiolies, Pleura, Alveoli
Function of Nose
Moisten air to the nostrils
Organ of smell
Lined with microbal hairs and mucus to collect bacteria
Function of the Pharynix
channels air and food down the airways consisting of 3 divisions in the upper respiritary system
Function of the Larynx
Essential for speech production
Function of Trachea
Is the main airway to the lungs, located below the larnyx
Function of the Bronchi
Connected to the trachea they enter the lungs at the hilium.
Network of passages that supp;y the lungs with air.
Made of cartilage, involuntary muscle and connective tissue.
Diaphram
Muscle that contracts and relaxes to allow air into the lungs
Epiglottis
leaf shaped cartilage that is controlled by the larnix to open and close during swallowing
The upper respiritary system consists of:
pharynx: nasopharynx, oropharnyx, laryngopharynx.
The lower respiritary system consists of:
larnyx, trachea, broncioli, bronciolipulmonary segments, bronchilies and alveoli.
pleural membrane
gives the lungs flexibility
alvioli
surrounded by a network of capilaries. De-oxygenated blod enters the capilary network and oxygenated blood leaves via pulmonary veins. Gas exchange takes place .
what are the 3 defences of the respiratory system
Cilia- sweeping motion to transport mucus
- produced by goblet cells
macrophages- attempt to clean off micro-organisms
ventalation is
the movement of air in and out the lungs
inhilation is
inhale of air into the lungs
exhilation is
movement of air out of the lungs
tidal volume is
ammount of air moved in and out of the lungs in a quiet relaxed state
external respiration
air into lungs- alveoli- blood- air back to alvioli and released as CO2
Internal respiration
co2- blood- body cells- co2- blood
Describe diffusion
De-oxygenated blood from Pulmonary artery
air arrives (high o2 low co2)
Air departs (low o2 high co2)
co2 passes from blood to alvioli
oxygenated bloof travels to heart via pulmonary veins
what are chemoreceptors
neurotransmitters found in the aorta send impluses to the medulla and pons about the 02 and co2 levels and controls inhaling and exhaling
what are intercostal muscles
muscles between the ribs that aid the diaphragm movements
