digestive system Flashcards
What are the 6 main organs included in digestion
Mouth Pharynx Oesophagus Stomach Small intestine Large Intestine
What are the accessory organs of the digestive system
teeth 3 salivary glands liver bile ducts pancreas
Briefe description of the mouth
Consisting of: Tounge, saliva, teeth work together to create bolus. Enzymes in the saliva break down proteins. Tounge pushes bolus into pharynx.
Describe the Pharynx role in digestion
Food is passed down the 3 sections of the pharynx (Oropharnyx, nasopharynx and the laryngopharynx). The epiglottis covers the larnyx and muscular tissue pushes bolus to the oesphagus.
how many layers does the oesophagus have
4
Measured by the number of vertebrae, a muscular canal passes behind the trachea. Peristaltic wave pushes food to the stomach. What organ is this?
oesophagus
What are the 3 layers of muscle in the stomach
Longnitudinal, Cicular, Oblique
what are the 3 functions of the stomach?
Churn food
continue the digestion of food through gastric juice
secrete the factors required for absorbtion of B12
function of the duodenum
Linked to the gall bladder, produces bile to break down fats
function of the small intestine
Nutrients are absorbed into the blood stream
What are the 5 sections of the large intestine
Cecum, ascending, transverse, descending, sigmoid colon
function of the large intestine
excrete feces
absorb water and salts
