Respiratory System Flashcards
4 Stages of Respiration
- Pulmonary Ventilation
- External gas exchange
- Gas transport into blood
- Internal Gas exchange
Describe Pulmonary ventilation
Initial exchange between oxygen in atmosphere and alveoli
Describe external gas exchange
Diffusion of oxygen into the blood and carbon dioxide out of the blood
Describe gas transport into blood
Blood circulates oxygen to the tissues and CO2 out of the tissues
Describe internal gas exchange
Exhange of oxygen and CO2 from blood to body cells
The nasal septum is divided by which two parts
- Ethmoid
2. Vomer
What is the septum the walls of the nasal cavity lined with?
Mucus membrane
List 3 things that occur when air comes into contact with nasal lining
- Filtration
- Air is warmed
- Air is moistened
What is surfactant
Compounds that lower surface tension between two liquids or between liquid and solid
Is inspiration active or passive and why?
Active because it requires muscular contraction
Is expiration active or passive and why?
No because it requires no muscle contraction
Expiration depends on which two factors
- Recoil of elastic fibers
2. INward pull of surface tension due to film over alveoli
What maintains the openness of the trachea
Cartilage rings
What is intrapulmonary pressure?
Pressure in the alveoli
Surfactant function in alveoli
Interference with water cohesion in alveoli
