Skeletal System Flashcards
List 3 functions of the skeleton
- Provide framework structure for body
- Store calcium salts to be reabsorbed if calcium levels are low
- Produce blood cells (in marrow)
How many bones are there in the adult human body?
206
What are the two divisions of the skeleton?
Axial skeleton (central portion) and Appendicular Skeleton (extremities)
List 4 types of bone formations
- Flat (ribs)
- Short (carpals, tarsals)
- Irregular (facial)
- Long (femur)
What is the Diaphysis?
The long narrow shaft of a long bone
Which cavity is located at the center of the diaphysis?
Medullary cavity
What are the two ends of the long bone called?
Proximal and distal epiphysis
Where is red bone marrow located?
Spongy bone at the ends of long bones
Center of other bones
Purpose of red bone marrow
Manufacture blood cells
Where is yellow bone marrow located and what is it’s composition?
Located in central cavities of long bones and made of fat
The membrane of the bone
periosteum and endosteum
Purpose of periosteum
Contains osteoblast which are essential to bone growth and repair
What is bone tissue called?
Osseous tissue
Two types of Osseous tissue
- Compact bone
2. Spongy bone
What is the skeleton composed almost entirely of during early development?
Cartilage
