Respiratory system Flashcards
1
Q
Function of the respiratory system
5
A
- bring air from the atmosphere to the lungs
- transfer oxygen to the blood
- remove carbon dioxide from the blood
- expel heat and water vapour in the air breathed out
- allow vocal cords to create speech as air is breathed out
2
Q
Structure of the respiratory system
A
Has three sections
- the conducting system, the air passages
- the lungs
- the diaphragm
3
Q
Gas exchange
A
Oxygen and carbon dioxide more between the lung and blood by the thin walls of both the alveoli and capillaries, this is where the diffusion happens
4
Q
Steps with breathing in
A
- as the diaphragm contracts the chest cavity expands
- as it expands the pressure inside decreases and so the air under higher pressure outside the lungs is sucked in
5
Q
Steps with breathing out
A
- expiration occurs when the diaphragm relaxes and the chest cavity returns to its smaller at rest state.

A
- left lung
- bronchiole
- alveolus
