Respiratory system (2) - 22% Flashcards
What is Diffusion?
Diffusion occurs when particles spread.
Diffusion happens when the particles are free to move.
Particles diffuse from areas of high concentration to low concentration.
Whats Dalton’s Law of Partial Pressures?
The law states that the total pressure exerted by a mixture of gases is the sum of the pressures exerted independently by each gas in the mixture.
The partial pressure of each gas is directly proportional to its % in the total gas mixture.
Whats Henry’s Law?
When a mixture of gases is in contact with a fluid each gas will dissolve in proportion to its partial pressure.
The volume of gas that will dissolve in a liquid at any given partial pressure also depends on the solubility of the gas in the liquid.

What two ways is Oxygen carried?
- 5% combined with haemoglobin
1. 5 % in plasma.
What three ways in Carbon dioxide carried?
- dissolved in plasma 7%-10%
- Chemically bound to haemoglobin 20%-30%
- As bicarbonate ion in plasma 60%-70%
Role of Haemoglobin (Hb)
Each Hb molecule binds four oxygen atom in a rapid and reversible process creating oxyhemoglobin.
When the Hb relates oxygen is is called reduced haemoglobin (HHb)
What four things affect Haemoglobin ability to attach and or detach oxygen?
- partial pressure of carbon dioxide
- temperature
- concentration of hydrogen ions [lower pH]
- a chemical called BPG (2,3-biphosphoglycerate)
An increase in each factors will decrease haemoglobin’s affinity for oxygen and enhance oxygen unloading from the blood.
