Respiratory system (1) - 22% Flashcards
What are the 4 components of respiration?
- Pulmonary ventilation - air moved in and out of the lungs, commonly called ventilation or breathing.
- External respiration - gas exchange between the blood and alveoli air.
- Transport of respiratory gases - blood as a transporting medium.
- Internal respiration - gas exchanges between blood and tissue cells.
What organs make up the respiratory system?
Nose, nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi and branches, bronchioles and lungs.

What is The Conducting Zone?
Consists of the bronchi and subdivisions (the bronchial tree)
Once inside the lungs the primary bronchi splits into secondary bronchi which then branch into the tertiary bronchi
In total about 23 levels of branching and this produces airway generation.
What is the Respiratory Zone?
Provides the site of gas exchange and consists of: respiratory bronchioles, alveolar ducts and alveoli.
What two things directly causes the volume of a gas to vary?
Temperature [Charles’s Law].
Pressure [Boyle’s Law]
Breathing in and out (Fact Card)
When breathing in it increases the volume in the lungs yet decreases the pressure as the ribs move up and out
