Muscles (2) - 15% Flashcards
What is Muscle Biopsy?
Muscle biopsy allows us to study muscle fibres and the effects of acute exercise and chronic training on muscle fibre composition
Muscle Fibre Types (FACT CARD)
Skeletal muscle contains type I and type II fibers
Type II motor units have more muscle fibers to contract and produce more force than type I motor units
Type I fibers have higher aerobic endurance and are well suited to low-intensity endurance activities
Type II fibers are better suited for anaerobic activity
What muscle fibres would speed and strength athletes have a higher percentage of ?
Type II fibres
What muscle fibres would endurance athletes have a higher percentage of ?
Type I fibres
What are the 3 types of muscle contraction ?
Concentric
Isometric
Eccentric
What are Muscle Spindles ?
They detects, responds to, and modulates changes in the length of the muscle fibres to provide an important regulatory function for movement and maintenance of posture
What three main components make up the stretch reflex?
Muscle spindle that responds to stretch
Efferent nerve fibres
Efferent spinal cord motor neuron that activates the stretched muscle fibres
What are Golgi Tendon Organs ?
Connect to muscle fibres near a tendon’s junction to muscle and detect differences in the tension generated by active muscle to protect the muscle and surrounding connective tissue by transmitting signals to the spinal cord to reflex the muscles
