Metabolism, Energy Expenditure and Body Composition - 6% Flashcards
What is Metabolism?
The chemical processes occurring within a living cell or organism that are necessary for the maintenance of life
What three things make up your Total Daily Energy Expenditure?
Resting metabolic rate (basal, sleeping and arousal
metabolism)
Thermogenic effect of food consumed
Energy expended during physical activity and recovery
What is basal metabolic rate?
The minimum level of energy required to support the body’s vital functions
What is Resting metabolic rate?
The calories the body uses to maintain vital body functions (heart rate, brain function, and breathing)
What are the 4 mechanisms of heat transfer?
Radiation - infra red waves (thermal energy) at rest ~ 50-60% body heat loss.
Conduction - heat transfer between objects that are in direct contact.
Convection – vertical heat movement in fluids. This due to density changes a the fluid.
Evaporation - heat absorbed from the body causes water molecules to change from a liquid to a gas.
