Respiratory System Flashcards
Passage of Air
Nose and Mouth → Pharnyx → Trachea “windpipe” → Bronchi and Bronchioles → Lungs and Alveoli → Bronchi and Bronchioles → …
Nasal Cavity
- Brings air into respiratory system
- Hairs in nostril help filter air we breathe
- Moistens and warms air that comes into lungs
Larynx “voice box”
- Air passes through larynx
- Vocal cords vibrate, creating sound of voice
Vocal cord nodules
Growths on the vocal cords (from constant straining of voices
Trachea “windpipe”
Tube connecting pharynx with lungs
Cilia (found in Trachea)
Use beating motion (moving back and forth) to push mucus and particles out of respiratory system (exhaled or digested).
Bronchi and Bronchioles
- Branches of trachea bringing air deeper into lungs
- Left and right bronchi → bronchioles are smaller branches
Alveoli
Spherical hollow cavities increasing surface area for gas exchange
Lungs
- Made of tiny air sacs called alveoli
- Location where oxygen exchanged w/ carbon dioxide
Capillaries
Tiny blood vessels that line alveoli to make gas exchange possible
Diaphragm
Dome-shaped muscle under ribs helping inhale and exhale
Inhaling
- Diaphragm is flattened(contracted)
- Volume increases
Gas exchange
- Carbon dioxide moves out of red blood cell into alveoli
- Oxygen moves into red blood cell from alveoli
Exhaling
- Diaphragm is dome-shaped (relaxed)
- Volume decreases
Larger lung volumes
- Males
- Taller people
- Non-smokers
- Athletes
