Respiratory System Flashcards
Name two of the main Functions of the respiratory system?
Gas exchange, voice production,
protection (preventing and removing dangerous bacteria and microorganism)
Name the 3 main parts of respiratory system?
Three main parts: airways (nose, mouth,
pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi + bronchioles), lungs + muscle of respiration (diaphragm, intercostal muscles)
Function of the nose.
The nasal cavity warms, moistens and filters inhaled air
Name the two functions of the pharynx?
The pharynx chamber serves both respiratory + digestive functions
What is the larynx also called?
The “voice box”
What is the respiratory tract lined with?
ciliated mucous membrane
What is the difference between External and Internal respiration?
External respiration involves the exchange of gases between the alveoli + capillary the lungs (blood). Internal respiration
involves the exchange of gases between the blood + body cells.
How many lobes are in each lung?
right 3, left 2
What are the smallest bronchioles called?
terminal bronchioles
Name three diseases and disorders of the Respiratory System?
Asthma, emphysema, bronchitis,
cystic fibrosis
where in the feet would you find the lungs reflex point?
The lungs reflex point is on the ball of
the foot (both feet)
where in the feet would you find the throat reflex point?
You can find it on the front of the big
toe (both feet) at the very base of it
Where would you find bronchioli
Lungs
What is the function of the respiratory system?
Exchange of gasses - oxygen from the atmosphere into the body and carbon dioxide from the body.
A brief description of the lungs. Name one function of the lungs?
The lungs are a pair of spongy, air-filled organs located on either side of the chest (thorax). The main function of the lungs is the process of gas exchange called respiration
What is external respiration?
Exchange of gasses from outside the body to the alveoli.
What structures keep the trachea supported and open?
C shaped rings of hyaline cartilage
12) Give two functions of the larynx.
Takes air from the mouth to the trachea. Contains vocal cords to produce sound
Where would you find the pleural cavity and what does it do?
The pleural cavity is the space that lies between the pleura, the two thin membranes that line and surround the lungs. The pleural cavity contains a small amount of liquid known as pleural fluid, which provides lubrication as the lungs expand and contract during respiration
Briefly describe how the body takes in oxygen and releases carbon-dioxide?
Air (oxygen) enters the respiratory system through our mouth and nose. Gas exchange takes place in the millions of alveoli in the lungs and the capillaries that envelop them. Inhaled oxygen moves from the alveoli to the blood in the capillaries, and carbon dioxide moves from the blood in the capillaries to the air in the alveoli (diffusion)
What reflexology points would you treat and what advice would you give to a mother of a child that has influenza?
Spleen, Thymus, lymphatic system, adrenals, diaphragm, chest, lungs, all toes, pituitary, hypothalamus, intestines. Keep drinking water, keep temp at bay
What reflexology points would you treat and what advice would you give to someone suffering from Bronchitis?
Diaphragm, lungs, chest, spleen, thymus, ileocecal valve, shoulder/arm thoracic spine, mid back, lymphatic
How would you treat someone with pleurisy?
Points to treat Spleen, Thymus, lungs reflex point, adrenals, Diaphragm, lungs, chest, shoulder/arm thoracic spine, mid back, lymphatic
What is pleurisy
Pleurisy is a condition in which the pleura - two large, thin layers of tissue that separate your lungs from your chest wall - becomes inflamed. It causes sharp chest pain (pleuritic pain) that worsens during breathing. Most cases are the result of a viral infection (such as the flu) or a bacterial infection (such as pneumonia).
Name the three muscles of respiration
Diaphragm, internal intercostals, accessory muscles.
Give two functions of the muscular system.
Movement, stabilize the body, protection, aids circulation, produces heat
Where is the diaphragm located in the body and what is its function? And in the feet?
The diaphragm is the primary muscle used in respiration, which is the process of breathing. This dome-shaped muscle is located just below the lungs and heart. It contracts continually as you breathe in and out. In the feet the diaphragm is found just below the ball of the foot, In both feet
