Reproductive System Flashcards
Name the internal female reproductive organs
Ovaries
Fallopian tubes
Uterus
Cervix
Name 2 hormones released by the ovaries + their functions
Oestrogen: regulates menstrual cycle
Progesterone: prepares uterus for pregnancy + stimulates growth of mammary glands
Name 1 hormone released by the testes + its function
Testosterone: Regulates sexual development, libido, muscle mass + stinulates sperm production
Androstenedione: controls blood oestrogen levels
Name the male reproductive organs
Testes
Epididymides
Prostate
Penis
Urethra
Seminal vesicals
Vas deferens
Explain a menstrual cycle
Average 28 days, controled by ovarian hormones.
Follicular phase is between the shedding of the uterine lining + ovulation.
Oestrogen rises as the egg prepares for release. Luteal phase: the egg travels through the fallopian tube
Progesterone increases. Secretory phase: uterine linong breaks down or egg is fertilised
Where are the fallopian tubes:
1)in the body
2)in the feet
1)Each side of the uterus
2)Front of the ankle
Ovaries function
Egg production + release, hormone secretion
Testes function
Spermatogenesis + testosterone secretion
Where is the prostate
1) in the body
2) in the feet
1) between the bladder + the penis
2) at the end of the spinal reflex point, on the medial side of the foot, in the middle of the heel
How does the pituitary gland affect the female reproductive system
Controls ovarian hormone secretion
How does the pituitary gland affect the male reproductive system
Controls testosterone secretion in the testes
