Respiratory System Flashcards
A series of organs that take in oxygen and give off carbon dioxide
Respiratory System
Air is moistened, warmed and filtered as it enters the body
Nasal and Oral Cavities (mouth and nose)
The passage that leads from the nose and mouth to the larynx, both air and food pass here. It is made of 3 parts
Pharynx (Throat)
hollow muscular organ which holds the vocal cords (voice box) which produce sound
Larynx
a flap of elastic cartilage attached to the larynx that closes when food passes by
Epiglottis
A hollow tube (wind pipe) that connects the larynx to the right and left bronchus
Trachea
The two major air passageways leading from the trachea to the lungs
Bronchus (bronchi - plural)
the smallest air passageways coming off of the bronchi
Bronchioles
the air sacs at the end of the bronchioles where the gas exchange takes place (oxygen in and carbon dioxide out)
Alveoli
A sheet of internal skeletal muscle that extends across the bottom of the thoracic cavity, it pushes and pulls on the lungs as we inhale and exhale. Separates the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity
Diaphragm
Influenza, Pneumonia, Enterovirus, Bronchitis
Short term diseases of the respiratory system
Asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
Long term or constant diseases of the Respiratory System
an uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells, associated with smoking, can cause death
lung cancer
