Endocrine System Flashcards
The endocrine system works to maintain stable internal conditions (balance)
homeostasis
When glands receive and detect that a change has happened and the hormones are no longer released
negative feedback
Cells in the body that contain receptors that match certain hormones
target cells
The smallest structural and functional unit of an organism
cell
Chemical messengers that communicate information from one set of cells to another. Many move through the bloodstream.
hormones
ducted glands that release products into ducts, examples include sweat, tears and digestive juices
Exocrine glands
ductless glands that secrete products directly into the bloodstream
endocrine glands
A collection of glands that produce and secrete hormones
endocrine system
This gland is located in the brain. It stimulates the pituitary gland and controls hunger, thirst, fatigue, and circadian rhythms
Hypothalamus
Pea sized gland found at the base of the brain, it is sometimes called the “master gland” because it controls the function of most of the other endocrine glands.
Pituitary glands
Located near the center of the brain, looks like a pine cone, produces melatonin and helps regulate sleep patterns
Pineal Gland
Found in the lower part of the neck, shaped like a butterfly. It helps regulate growth and metabolism
Thyroid
Located behind the sternum in the chest, only active until puberty, stimulates the development of T-cells to protect the body from autoimmunity
Thymus
Located in the abdomen, secretes the hormones insulin (lowers) and glucagon (raises) to control blood sugar levels
Pancreas
located on the top of each kidney, helps control blood pressure, regulates reaction to stress.
