Nervous System Flashcards
A pathway in which your brain sends and receives information about what is happening in and around your body
Nervous System
What are the main organs of the nervous system
brain, spinal cord, and nerves
What are the two main systems the nervous system is broken down into?
Central Nervous system and Peripheral Nervous system
This system is made of the brain and spinal cord
Central Nervous system
The brain is protected by this part of the skeletal system
skull
The Peripheral Nervous System is made up of two systems
Somatic Nervous System and Autonomic Nervous System
This system carries messages to and from parts of the body to the central nervous system through nerves
Peripheral Nervous System
These messages are coming from all of your senses.
Somatic Nervous System
Makes sure the processes in your body work automatically
Autonomic Nervous system
This system controls the things you don’t have to think about
Autonomic Nervous system
Breathing, digesting and heart beating are controlled by this part of your nervous system
autonomic nervous system
Soft spongy mass of nerve cells and supportive tissue
Brain
These are the 3 main parts of the brain
Cerebrum, Cerebellum, and Brain Stem
This is the largest part of the brain, it uses information from our sense to tell us what is going on around us
Cerebrum
These are the four lobes of the cerebrum
frontal, parietal, occipital, and temporal
located under the cerebrum in the back of the brain, controls balance and complex actions like walking
cerebellum
Connects the brain to the spinal cord
brain stem
controls hunger and thirst, also the most basic body functions such as body temperature, blood pressure and breathing
Brain Stem
This is a part of the central nervous system that is between the brain and the body
spinal cord
Forms 31 pairs of spinal nerves
spinal cord
specialized cells that carry messages through an electrochemical process
neurons
this is the body of the cell
soma
these bring electrical signals towards the soma
dendrites
these take information away from the soma
axons
covers the axon and works like an insulator to keep the signal inside the cell
myelin sheath
a gap that separates the axon of one neuron and the dendrite of the next neuron
synapse
the message carried by neurons
nerve impulse
a nerve that carries impulses to the brain or spinal cord from a muscle or gland
sensory neuron
a connector neuron
interneuron
a nerve that carries impulses from the brain or spinal cord to a muscle or gland
motor nerve
and involuntary response to something which happens very quickly, it protects your body from harm, like putting your hand on a hot stove
reflex
