Respiratory System Flashcards
What does Aerobic Respiration mean?
Requires the use of oxygen.
What does Anaerobic Respiration mean?
Doesn’t require the use of oxygen.
What does Respiration mean?
Respiration is the release of energy from food.
What are the advantages of inhalation in the nose over the mouth?
- Hairs in the nose trap bacteria and dirt particles (filtering)
- Air is warmed and moistened as it passes through the nose.
What does the trachea (windpipe) do?
Carries air to and from the lungs and is supported and strengthened by rings of cartilage to prevent it being damaged.
What are bronchus and bronchiole?
The bronchus is a tube that carries oxygen into a lung
The bronchioles carry oxygen to and from the alveoli within the lungs.
What are alveoli (air sacs)?
Each lung contains millions of these hallow air sacs (alveoli). Each alveolus is surrounded by capillaries (blood vessels). It is in the capillaries where oxygen is exchanged for carbon dioxide. The exchange of gases is known as diffusion.
What is the diaphragm?
A sheet of muscle that forms the base of the chest. It’s function is to cause air to move in and out of lungs.
What is the epiglottis?
To prevent food/water going down the trachea we have a flap (epiglottis) that covers the trachea when we’re eating or drinking.
What is the difference between inhale & exhale?
Inhale: oxygen passes from our lungs into the bloodstream to our cells.
Exhale: the carbon dioxide and water vapour leave the body by breathing out.
What is the exchange of gases known as?
The exchange of gases is known as diffusion.
