Q

What is the octet rule?

A

This the governing rule of reactivity. All atoms want to be stable. They need a full outer orbit to be stable. A full outer orbit is usually 8 electrons. Hydrogen and helium are the exceptions as these both want 2 electrons in their outer orbits.
