Periodic Table Flashcards
Who is credited with the creation of the Periodic Table?
Dimitri Mendeleev, a Russian scientist who is credited with the creation of the Periodic Table.
Explain group 1. And explain the properties.
Alkali metals all have one electron in their orbit, and are very reactive.
Physical property: soft and easily cut
General property: stored in oil.
Explain group 2.
The Alkaline Earth Metals all have 2 electrons in their outer orbit. Not as reactive as Alkali Metals but still quite reactive.
Explain group 7.
Halogens have 7 electrons in their outer orbit so highly reactive.
Explain group 8.
Nobel Gases have 8 electrons in their outer orbit. Very unreactive - therefore stable
What is the octet rule?
This the governing rule of reactivity. All atoms want to be stable. They need a full outer orbit to be stable. A full outer orbit is usually 8 electrons. Hydrogen and helium are the exceptions as these both want 2 electrons in their outer orbits.
