Circulatory System Flashcards
What is blood?
Blood is a tissue as it consists of a group of cells with a similar structure and function. Blood is made up of 4 components:
1. plasma
2. red blood cells
3. white blood cells
4. platelets
- What is plasma?
- What are red blood cells?
- What are white blood cells?
- What are platelets?
- The liquid part of the blood
- Made in the bone marrow. Contains a protein pigment (haemoglobin). Haemoglobin helps carry oxygen around the body.
- WBC’s fight infection by surrounding and engulfing micro organisms.
- Help form blood clots e.g. a scab is formed.
What are blood vessels?
Each have a similar function - transport blood. Each are slightly different in their function:
Arteries carry blood away from the heart
Veins carry blood towards the heart
Capillaries connect arteries and veins and it is here where the substances are exchanged between cells.
What is the vena cava?
Vena cava carries deoxygenated blood to the right atria.
What is the pulmonary artery?
Carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs.
What is the pulmonary vein?
Carries oxygenated blood to the left atria.
What is the aorta?
Carries oxygenated blood to rest of body.
What is the average resting beat?
72 BPM at rest (average).
How can you get heart disease?
Heart disease is caused by eating too much fatty foods, not exercising and smoking.
What are the two blood circuits?
Pulmonary (lung) circuit: heart - lungs - heart
Systemic (body) circuit: heart - body - heart
