What does the oesophagus do?
The oesophagus is a muscular tube that forces food down to the stomach by movement called peristalsis.
What does the epiglottis do?
The epiglottis prevents food/water going down the trachea.
What does the stomach do?
A muscular bag that traps food for a few hours and uses chemical and physical digestion.
What does the small intestine do?
Nutrients are absorbed here into the blood stream.
What does the liver do?
Produces bile and produces heat.
What is bile?
Made in the liver, stored in the gallbladder and helps to break down fat
What does the pancreas do?
Leaf shaped gland and produces amylase to help digest starch.
What does the large intestine do?
Reabsorbs water from digested food and puts into the blood.
What are enzymes?
Enzymes break down food
What are the stages in feeding?
- Ingestion - Intake of food into mouth
- Digestion - Food is broken down into nutrients
- Absorption - The nutrients pass into the blood system
- Egestion - Waste material is removed from body in the form of faeces.
What are the two methods of digestion?
- Physical (mechanical) digestion
- Chemical digestion using enzymes & chemicals (biochemical reactions).
